From old records to new horizons

Growing up in Wisconsin, USA, Melissa Wiltzius spent many winter afternoons with the record player and the collection of classic albums from her parents and grandparents. Folk songs, jazz ballads, rock ‘n’ roll, and musical theater were in the air every day.

With later studies in classical music, she knew that she would want to keep active in music forever, and when her high school started a barbershop singing program, Melissa was hooked immediately.

Years later after a move to Berlin, she found her musical mentor, Dr. Steve Hepner, who had just founded the Women in Black. After many wonderful years of singing in the chorus and several quartets, Melissa became assistant director under the further mentorship of Francis Schmutzler.

In 2022, Melissa spent a year back home in the United States, and while there, she deepened her learning about barbershop, becoming involved with the Sweet Adelines.

Now back in Berlin and looking forward to new musical horizons, she has become the musical director of the Women in Black since Francis’ departure in November of 2023.

From old records to new horizons, Melissa has loved barbershop music through it all.
